Alibaba’s e-commerce platform Lazada 1.1 million account information was hacked

According to reports, Alibaba e-commerce platform and Singapore e-commerce company Lazada announced today that its 1.1 million account information was hacked. In this country (Singapore) with a population of 5.7 million, this is clearly a major hacking incident.

The account information includes the user’s home address and some credit card numbers. Lazada said in an e-mail that the information was stolen from the database of its grocery subsidiary RedMart and belonged to data 18 months ago.

Redmart was established in 2011 to provide online shopping services for fresh food and other groceries in Singapore. The platform covers more than 8,000 products. Its biggest feature is its self-built warehousing and logistics, which was acquired by Lazada in 2016.

A Lazada spokesperson said: “The illegally obtained user information includes names, phone numbers, email and mailing addresses, encrypted passwords and some credit card numbers.”

Lazada said that the company has taken immediate action to prevent access to the database, and its current user data will not be affected.

In June 2017, Alibaba announced another US$1 billion investment in Lazada, increasing its stake in Lazada from 51% to 83%.
